It seems increasingly normal to send cash instead of presents for certain events.Although this is widely accepted with reasons behind it,I consider it a negative development.
The preference for gifts of money can be attributed to culture and traditions in some countries, which have been passed on for generations. In China and other Asian countries, people are customed to give cash on occasions such as weddings and funerals. This is based on the belief that money is the best form of support for the newlyweds to start a life or show condolence to the people who suffer a loss.In other nations, people give cash to others mainly due to the pressure while shopping for the perfect presents, which can be notoriously time-consuming but does not necessarily satisfy the recipients. Therefore, more people opt for money so that their trouble is saved and recipients’freedom to treat themselves is allowed.
Nevertheless,I do not see this as a positive development since money as a gift is impersonal and lacking in creativity.Compared with a well-thought-out present, cash does not illustrate the sacrifice in terms of time and effort, which is,however, what people truly appreciate and help cement relationships. Therefore, sending money instead of tangible gifts could be perceived as a signal of less care and thought. From the gift receivers’perspective, the excitement and immediate gratification of tearing boxes and bags simply disappear but this can hardly be substituted by opening an envelope with money. Finally, the amount of money given to the recipient is tricky to decide, possibly leading to the feeling of unequal status between the two parties.
In conclusion, people’s preference for money to gifts is associated with traditions or the hope of saving time and trouble, but since this fails to convey intimacy,I reckon it is a negative development.
