There has been a constant debate over the purpose of learning a foreign language. As I see it, although speaking another language enables us to visit and work in foreign countries, I do think that we can reap more benefits from learning to speak a foreign language.

Admittedly, we can travel and work in a foreign area without communication barriers if we are able to speak the native language. Today, people are not separated by national boundaries. International travel allows people to get a clear perspective of the outside world. If we cannot speak the local language, we are unlikely to communicate with local residents, which would cause misunderstanding. Also, the bilingual skill is highly demanded in today's job market, as international trade is so thriving that employees are to be dispatched to work in another country very often.

On the other side of the debate, the benefits of learning another language are not restricted to traveling and working. From cultural perspective, the language forms a certain identity to a nation. Learning to speak this language contributes to better understanding of a country's history, traditions and cultures, because all of them are passed down from generation to generation by language. Besides, speaking another language not only broadens our mind, but also encourages us to see things from different angles. Why do western individuals and Chinese, for example, have different attitudes towards marriage and family? Moreover, research about linguistics has shown that people can express their ideas more logically by using their second language.

My view is that speaking a foreign language is beneficial to all of us, apart from the fact that we can live and work in foreign countries, in a broad sense; it will make us more open-minded and good at thinking more logically and critically.

關(guān)于學(xué)習(xí)外語的目的一直有爭論。在我看來，雖然說另一種語言使我們能夠訪問外國并在外國工作，但我確實(shí)認(rèn)為，我們可以從學(xué)習(xí)說外語中獲得更多好處。
