To begin with,being competitive provides incentives for people to excel in what they do.By competing with others,one has to develop various skills and nurture perseverance until achieving final goals.This is particularly the case for athletes aiming at defeating rivals and winning the championship in national or international games.Furthermore,people with a competitive personality can expand their comfort zone.In other words,it is important to get conditioned to the frustration and uncertainty brought by competitions.Learning from failures helps them build up resilience and become more capable adults.

On the other hand,opponents argue that competitiveness can be destructive to individuals.First of all,an intense level of competition places too much unnecessary stress and anxiety.People may feel disappointed and defeated when failing to measure up or efforts are not recognized.These negative experiences may destroy their self-esteem and affect their mental health.In addition,competition may hinder individuals from adapting to a new environment.If people incessantly concentrate on competing instead of cooperating,they tend to be self-conceited and self-centred,establishing a poor rapport with the peer group.

In conclusion,competitiveness is beneficial to individuals in general despite a few downsides.Instead of being mediocre and unmotivated,it is better for people to be distinguished with exceptional abilities.A person should find a balance and avoid being over-competitive;otherwise,the consequences can be severe.
