What kinds of books do you like to read?
I'd say I like reading quite a variety of books, both fiction as well as nonfiction. So for example, I'm a big fan of detective novels, because I enjoy trying to solve the crimes while I'm reading, although I have to admit I'm pretty useless at it most of the time! And as for nonfiction stuff, I'd say I mostly like reading things like self-help books and biographies of various people I admire, such as the new book on Steve Jobs, which I'm currently in the middle of reading.
Are you reading any books at the moment?
Yeah, I'm actually halfway through a couple of books right now. One of them's a novel which a friend of mine lent me, and the other is a book on business, which I bought about a year ago, but didn't get round to reading until now.
Describe an interesting tradition in your country
You should say:
what it is
where it came from
when it occurs
and say why you think it is interesting.
Well, China has a long and rich history, you know, so we have countless traditions, but today I’d like to talk about what usually happens during the Spring Festival, which is the most important celebration for Chinese people.
On Chinese New Year’s Eve, all the family members would come back home for the family reunion dinner, no matter where they are and how far away they are from home. And it’s not an ordinary meal, I mean, every dish has its special meaning. For example, we must eat fish that day, because in Chinese, fish is pronounced as YU which sounds like “surplus”, so you see, that’s a good wish for the coming new year, meaning that the family would make more than enough money.
And I’m sure you know the tradition that everyone has to eat dumplings on New Year’s Eve. The interesting part is, when we make the dumplings, we would mix some coins or peanuts into the fillings, and the one who get the specially made dumpling would have good luck throughout the whole year. I know it sounds a little superstitious, but it’s a time-honored tradition.
And there’s another activity we have to do during dinner, which is like a ritual, that is, to watch the Spring Festival Gala broadcast by China Central Television. It’s an annul variety show, and it’s the most watched TV show all around the world, you know, because of the large population in China.
Anyway, I think it is the tradition that helps people get in festive mood during Chinese New Year, so I believe it’s worth passing on the next generation.
1. Do you think it's important to be on time?
Yeah, I think it definitely is, because it’s basic manners to be on time for things. You know, I think you‘d agree it’s pretty rude to keep people waiting, and so it kind of leaves a bad impression on people.
2. How do you feel when others are late?
Well I guess it kind of depends, because I mean, if there’s a good reason for being late, you know, like getting stuck in traffic, then I won’t really mind that much. But you know, if the person doesn’t really have any excuse and it’s simply because they couldn’t be bothered to arrive on time, then I suppose I might feel a bit annoyed.
Other ideas:
If someone’s late by only a few minutes or so, then that’s no big deal, you know, I have no problem at all with that. But if someone’s late by, like, an hour or something, then it can be pretty annoying, especially if I’ve gone to the trouble of getting there on time.
3. Are you, yourself, late very often?
If yes:
Yeah, I am. And I know it’s a bad habit, but for some reason, no matter how hard I try, I always seem to end up being late for things!
If no:
No, I wouldn’t say I am. You know, most of the time I’m pretty good with being on time for things, because I always make a quite big effort not to be late.
4. When does time seem to move fast, and when does it seem to move slowly?
Well, I think most people would agree that time moves fast when you’re having fun. And a prime example would be when playing computer games, cos I mean, whenever I play online with my friends, it always seems that only an hour or two has passed, but in actual fact, it’s probably been four or five hours!
And time normally goes slowly when you’re bored or simply just not enjoying yourself. For example, I remember at school, some of my classes felt like they would never end, when in fact they were just, like, 45 minutes long!
1. When was the last time you did something in a hurry?
Um… when was it?...Let me have a think…I guess it was probably um… a few weeks ago, when I was on holiday, and I had booked a taxi to arrive at the place where I was staying, at about noon-ish, and I still had some clearing up to do, you know, I didn’t want to leave the place in a mess. So yeah, I was basically in a hurry tidying everything up and getting all my things packed before the taxi arrived.
2. Do you like to finish things quickly?
Yeah I do, cos I really don’t like things to hang over me, you know, it’s just not a nice feeling when you’ve got stuff to do hanging at the back of your mind. So I like to get stuff done as quickly as I can,but saying that, I still want to do it well of course! I mean, I’m not gonna do something haphazardly just to get it done quickly, I still wanna make sure I do it well!
3. What kinds of things do you never do in a hurry?
It’s an interesting question!... I’ve never really thought about that one! What kinds of things will I never do in a hurry?...um… I suppose things I would never do in a hurry would be important things, like coursework which counts towards my final grade, and what else?...I’m kind of hard pressed to think! Um… oh yeah, getting to the airport to catch a flight! You know, I’ll always give myself lots of time to get there, even if it means I arrive at the airport several hours in advance, cos it just gives me peace of mind. I mean, if you miss a flight, then your holiday’s probably gone down the drain, so it can be pretty disastrous!
4. Why do people make mistakes more easily when they are in a hurry?
Um… well thinking about it, I suppose it’s simply because when people are in a hurry, they’re not really thinking clearly. You know, their mind’s kind of um.. how can I put it… I guess you could say flustered, thinking about lots of things at the same time, and not really being focused. So in that state of mind, I think you’d agree it’s easy to overlook things, especially small details, which will likely lead to mistakes being made!
