Please describe a person who has greatly influenced you
You should say:
Who the person is (was)
How you came into contact with this person
How he/she has influenced you and why
And you have you say whether this person has influenced others
To talk about a person who has influenced me the most, I think there is none other but my father. Working as a government official, he doesn’t appear to be extraordinary in any way, but just working faithfully and peacefully raising his family, never putting his family or children aside. Yet however regular he may look, he is never ordinary to me, because I’ve learned many of the most basic and important life lessons from him: family, responsibility, accountability, faithfulness, vision and fulfilling goals, etc.—he is the first and best teacher in my life. As to influence, people all influence one another in one way or another during their contact. But as to whether my father has influenced other people as much as he does to me, I am not sure. Nevertheless I always hear people in the neighborhood talking about him as a model husband and family head. He must have touched some lives.
How do you like people to view you?
I’d like people to view me as a determined and strong leader. I need these qualities to be affirmed by people that they can look up to me for leadership.
Do you think that people are often influenced by material things (eg. money, car)?
As I am purposefully trying to avoid the danger of generalization, I can only tell you that there are definitely some people who are very easily influenced by materials things, while it is also certain that there are people who are not so easily influenced by material things; they often tend to have strong personal values.
Do people’s characters change as they get older?
People’s characters depend on many things, including their experiences, relationships, health and financial situations. As these things change over time, so we also see people’s character’s change.
Describe an exciting book
You should say:
What is the name of the book
what type of book it is
how you knew this book
and explain why you like to recommend this book to your friend
I’m going to tell you about a book I’ve been reading recently. The book is called The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat.
It’s a slightly unusual book and I’m not sure how you would categorise it. In a way it’s a medical case history – or a collection of them. It’s written by a Professor of Neurology I think – he’s certainly not professional author. And it’s just the stories of some of the more unusual patients he’s treated. Each chapter is about a different patient. All of them have something wrong with their brain and think in a strange way. For instance, the character who gave his name to the title of the book cannot distinguish people from objects and actually did think his wife was a hat and tried to put her on his head!
I tend to read the book in the evenings or on the train in the morning. I like to read before I go to bed – I find it relaxing and it’s a quiet time when I can concentrate on what I’m reading. I suppose I read on the train for a different reason – there’s nothing else to do but look out of the window. The only problem is that the carriage is normally pretty noisy with other passengers talking and it’s much harder to concentrate.
This is actually the second time I’m reading the book. I first read it about 3 years ago and I enjoyed it so much I decided to read it again and it wouldn’t surprise me if I read it for a third time too.
Why do I like it so much? There’s plenty of reasons. It’s an intelligent book that makes you think. I enjoy books like that. I also prefer non-fiction to fiction as I think that’s more stimulating and I certainly prefer reading to watching the television.
Well, one particularly unpleasant experience that sticks in my memory was the time I went to Huangshan with my mum and brother, which must have been about 2 or 3 years ago, when my mum came over to visit me in Hangzhou. We had decided to go travelling to Huangshan as none of us had been there before, and we’d heard a lot of great things about it.
And basically what happened was that we got caught in a big storm, which seemed to spring up out of nowhere, because one minute it was pretty sunny, and the next it was, quite literally, pouring down with rain, and I mean, REALLY chucking it down!
What didn’t help us was the fact that, at the time the storm hit, we were right on top of a mountain, and because we hadn’t checked the weather forecast, we didn’t have any umbrellas with us, so we got absolutely soaked!
And the worst thing was, when we reached the cable car to get down the mountain, we were told that it had closed early for safety reasons, coz there were some flashes of lightening, and this apparently made the cable car unsafe to go in.
So we ended up having no choice but to walk down the mountain instead, and because it was still raining when we got to the bottom, we couldn’t find a single free taxi. So there we were, completely drenched and utterly exhausted, stuck in the middle of nowhere.
Thankfully, though, after what seemed like an eternity, a minivan finally pulled up and gave us a lift back to where we were staying, which was a huge relief. I honestly don’t know what we would have done if it hadn’t come, because it was getting pretty dark and most people had already left the mountains, so thank goodness it came!
And looking back on it now, I would say I actually gained quite a lot from this experience, as it’s really kind of taught me to appreciate the times when I do have easy access to transportation, which is most of the time.
So yeah, that’s pretty much it, and I hope the story wasn’t too boring!
