People all over the world think that nuclear weapons should be abolished. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Nuclear weapons first dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 forever changed the face of war, and the half-century of Cold War which followed was dominated, above all,by the threat of nuclear destruction. I wholeheartedly endorse the position that nuclear weapons should be abolished.(高分理由:引用歷史事實作為文章的開頭,很有說服力。作者在開頭段后一句明確提出了自己的觀點。)。
The first reason for abolishing nuclear weapons is that any weapon which could not possibly be used in a responsible manner should not be permitted. Over the past fifty years, we have seen a general tendency towards limited warfare and precision weapons, allowing military objectives to be achieved with minimal loss of civilian life. The entire point of nuclear weapons, however, is their massive, indiscriminate destructive power, which means their use could kill tens of thousands of civilians directly, and their catastrophic environmental after-effects would harm many more all around the world. These effects could never be morally acceptable, particularly as the basis of one' s national security strategy, because they place humanity and most forms of life in jeopardy of annihilation.(高分理由:本段提出了贊成廢除核武器的第一個理由,采用了“主題句+支持句”的展開方法。支持句充分有力,并使用了分詞短語、定語從句、原因狀語從句等多種句式。)。
Another reason for discarding nuclear weapons is that by claiming the efficacy of nuclear weapons as a strategic deterrent, the current nuclear powers encourage the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. To be a part of the so-called “nuclear club” is seen as a matter of great prestige. Therefore, nations opposed to a nuclear power feel that they need to develop their own capability in order to protect themselves. The declared nuclear powers must,as a result, take the lead in disarmament, as an example for the rest of the world.(高分理由:Another reason…和第二段中的The first reason …相呼應(yīng)。)。
The most critical consideration for my argument lies in the fact that if nuclear weapons exist, they can fall into the wrong hands. This is particularly prevalent in an environment whereby there are extremist groups actively seeking to cause instant, egregious harm to their ideological and political enemies. The danger of a weapon being stolen, or a nuclear base being taken over by disgruntled members of the military or other extremists, can only be ended by destroying the weapons.(高分理由:The most critical consideration for my argument相當(dāng)于The most important reason for my argument,變換一種表達(dá)方式使得句式更豐富。第一句中that引導(dǎo)同位語從句,從句的應(yīng)用凸顯出作者對英語的熟練掌握程度。)。
The co-operation between the two nuclear powers, the United States and Russia, has made some progress in the reduction in nuclear stockpiles. The process will not be swift, but it is plausible.
