Describe a traditional festival.

You should say:

what it is

when it is celebrated

how it is celebrated

and explain how you feel about this traditional festival.

We have many traditional festivals in China, the most famous one being Spring Fes-tival, or Chinese New Year. But I’d like to talk about a festival that occurs every year around September or early October, called Zhong Qiu Jie, or Mid-Autumn Day. It is perhaps lesser-known outside of China, but it is personally one of my favourite fes-tivals and one that I look forward to every year.

As the name suggests, Mid-Autumn Day should take place around the middle of au-tumn. The reason the date changes is because it should be the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, and this changes in the Western calen-dar depending on the year.

The reason it is one of my favourite festivals is because we eat moon cakes! As well as being delicious, moon cakes have a special meaning. They are round, which is a symbol of family and togetherness. They usually have a sweet filling, which represents a sweet and happy life. Moon cakes are generally only around at this time of year, so it’s important to make the most of them while you can.

As you can tell, I’m a big fan of Mid-Autumn Day. It makes me feel warm, thinking about my family, and a little nostalgic as I remember all the years I have eaten moon cakes. I think it’s very important to keep these traditional festivals going as they rein-force Chinese culture and remind us to think about our families at a time when more and more people may live a long way from home.

雅思口語游泳話題

1 Can you swim?

No, I can't. I hate to get water in my ears and nose.

2 Do you like swimming?

Yes, I am crazy about swimming especially butterfly stroke and breaststroke. I believe swimming can help me build up my body and makes me keep a trim figure.

3 Have you ever tried to learn to swim?

Not yet. Although I want to learn I know absolutely nothing about swimming. No floating, no doggie paddle, I can't even kick the right way. It's hard for me to get a start.

4 Did you learn to swim when you were a child?

Yes, I did. But it isn't the regular swimming stroke like butterfly stroke. It's doggy-paddling.

5 Who taught you to swim?

My dad threw me into the swimming pool when I was five. I caught on pretty quickly with the water wings. Then, I took swimming lesson. I learned professional swimming stroke from the lifeguard.

6 How did you learn to swim?

As I remember, my uncle took me to take a swimming course when I was 10 years old. During that 15-day course, the instructor taught us swimming from ABC. We need to practice holding breath under water and floating on the water surface as the first step. On the last day, we had a small test of swimming across the pool to demonstrate our real capability. It was great fun.

7 Where do people go swimming in your hometown?

In Wuhan, people mostly go to public swimming pools if they want to swim. Some of these facilities are pretty affordable. Also some communities have their own swimming pool, and this is truly convenient for residents living there. Then the last choice would be the Yangtze River. Even though this is not so clean and a little risky at the same time, many people actually swim there, coz after all you have to pay nothing for it.

8 Is swimming very popular in China?

It's popular in china. Many communities have their own swimming pool and swimming club.

9 Why do many people like swimming?

Swimming has been recognized as an aerobic exercise which is good for building your aerobic system. Swimming is physically demanding but it won't give you strong muscle but beautiful figure.

Describe a change that will improve your local area.

You should say:

what the change is

why the change is needed

whether there will be any problems associated with change

and explain how it will improve your local area.

Just one look out of my window will tell you that my local area is crying out for more car parking spaces. Anyone with half a brain can see that the current situation is untenable in the long run.

As it stands, people are left with no choice but to park in the street, regardless of whether there are yellow lines or signs prohibiting it. I’ve even seen cars parked on the pavement or parked sideways to fit into very small spaces on the side of the road. In some instances cars are double parked, meaning that the person inside is blocked in and prevented from leaving!

I realize the change won’t come easily. As much as I would like to see it happen, there is no space to put a new car park in the area. You can’t just go knocking down buildings willy-nilly and at any rate the local authorities take an age to make any decisions or changes. Any new parking area would have to be located a few blocks away and this would cause uproar with drivers who are too lazy to walk an extra 5 or 10 minutes.

If they can ever get their act together and come up with a plan, I think it would be of huge benefit to the local area. The streets would not be cluttered up with vehicles, it would reduce congestion and people would be able to use the pavements again, rather than walking on the roads and being in danger of getting run over.

Describe something you enjoy doing with an old person in your family

You should say:

What it is

How often you do it

Who you do it with

Why you enjoy doing it with this person

I enjoy spending time with my maternal grandmother. She is eighty and has an opinion on anything and everything. My grandma is an energetic person. She has some age-related problems but she gets about more than my mother or me. Actually, there are hardly any temples in South India that she hasn’t been to. She is fluent in most South Indian languages and also possesses a working knowledge of Sanskrit. I visit my grandmother at least once a month. When we were kids, we used to spend the weekends at her place and then she would tell us numerous stories from Hindu mythology and keep in entertained for hours on end. Actually, if I am deeply religious today, that is because of her. She also visits us very often, and whenever she does she makes it a point to bring us lots of gifts and other goodies. She is a generous woman who enjoys giving food and money to the needy. The reason that I enjoy spending time with her is that she has a positive attitude towards anything. Actually I have never seen her looking depressed or hopeless. She is great fun to be with.
