The consumption of resources has increased rapidly and our lives have been affected by high energy prices. It is important to take steps to reverse this trend and prevent the depletion of various resources.

The rapid population growth has increased the demand for food as well as industrial goods, and led to the shortage of resources. Technological advances, especially those in the medical sector, have improved life expectancy, as the infant mortality rate has dropped because of the extensive use of vaccines, and new medicines have been invented to cure life-threatening diseases. It follows that farms have to increase food production to feed an ever-growing population, but cultivating crops, irrigation, harvesting and packaging food all consume energy. Factories also have to manufacture more household products, including refrigerators, TV sets and furniture, which require the use of timber, metals and plastics.

Another reason is that people are not aware of the importance of conserving resources. Many commuters have chosen to drive to work, instead of using public transport, because they do not realize that increased car use can speed up fuel consumption. Few people have measures in place to reduce electricity consumption, and examples like keeping television and lights on when they are not at home are everywhere. This means that the energy sector has to explore remote areas for natural gas and oil drilling to keep pace with the growing demand for electricity.

Technological innovations may help us achieve the sustainable use of resources. Alternative energy sources including solar power can be developed and promoted, while the recycling of waste water, paper and electrical equipment should also be encouraged in the public. Another solution is to launch campaigns to raise the awareness of resource conservation. There are many ways to go green, such as taking public transport, cycling to work, using energy-efficient products and turning to reusable shopping bags.

In conclusion, the depletion of resources can happen, if the worlds population expands constantly and we do not act to change our habits. Technology can improve the situation and it is also important to educate the public to do something meaningful to make a difference.
