In my opinion, a press conference is essential for a company to release new technology. Sings a press conference is more intuitive than only publishing information online. A large company like Microsoft or Apple has the confidence to hold a press conference to let everyone knows their new technology or product. And that is also the reason that everyone knows the brand and set a timer for the conference.
