MIT Scholarships
MIT scholarships are awarded based on financial need and come from endowed funds, gifts from MIT alumni and friends, and general MIT funds. You are automatically considered for an MIT scholarship if you apply for financial aid and fill out the CSS PROFILE.
Scholarship recipients must submit an annual Student Information Review Form to provide us with information about your background, interests, and experiences so that we may match you with the right scholarship. We will contact you when we need this form.
Our scholarship donors take an interest in learning about their scholarship recipients, so we may ask you to write your donor to share your experiences and thank them for their support.
56% of MIT undergraduates receive MIT scholarships that average $38,871 per student.
Loans
Either you or your parents can borrow an education loan, but there are different programs for students and parents. If your family wants to borrow, start applying for financial aid, since often the most affordable loans are student loans based on need. Federal loans are restricted to U.S. citizens or permanent residents, but other loan programs are not.
Some loans, referred to as subsidized loans, do not accrue interest while you are in school. Unsubsidized loans do accrue interest that may be paid while you are in school or is added to your principal balance when you graduate.
In our award notification to you we may recommend a specific student loan amount as a part of your self-help award. However, you may borrow less or more than that amount to fit your needs.
Veterans Benefits

Other Scholarships Grants
MIT undergraduates receive need-based scholarships and grants from MIT, the federal government, state governments, as well as scholarships and grants from private (outside) sources that may be need-based or merit-based.
Federal Grants
MIT administers four federal grant programs you’ll automatically be considered for when you apply for financial aid each year. If you’re eligible, we include these federal grants in your aid package: on the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants.
State Grants
Some states have their own financial aid programs, including need-based grants and merit-based scholarships. If you’re a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you may qualify for financial aid from your home state, which you can then use to study at MIT. If you’re eligible for one of these state grants, we will include it in your aid award once we receive the funds from your state.
Private Scholarships and Grants
There are many private scholarships and grants you can seek on your own. Reach out to the groups you have been involved in to see if they may offer private scholarships. If you receive one, we use it to replace your self-help before we reduce your MIT scholarship. There are many free scholarship search engines that you are encouraged to use. However, you should never pay for a scholarship search service.
Student Employment
Earning a weekly paycheck is a great way to cover books and personal expenses. We encourage you to cover a portion of your self-help by working and we list the first $3,400 of our financial aid awards as employment. Students work both on-campus in department offices, labs and centers, as well as off-campus in the community. If you work on-campus you can expect to earn at least the MIT minimum student wage of $11.50/hr (as of the 17–18 academic year). The average MIT student works about 10 hours/week earning around $1,700 per term.

graduate students
Most forms of financial support for graduate students are granted by the individual academic departments. Graduate students apply through SFS for student loans from federal and private sources and for student employment under the Federal Work-Study Program. If you have an outside sponsor, we assist you by billing your sponsor.
Loans
Graduate students who are U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for all federal and private loan programs. International students may borrow from private sources, but not from federal programs. View our Graduate Student Loans chart for current interest rates and information.

Private Loans
These are student and parent loans made from third party lenders. Ordinarily, you should not consider a private education loan unless all of your federal eligibility is exhausted because the terms and conditions of private loans, including the interest rates, are often less favorable.
Read our guide on private loans and please contact us if you have questions. Before certifying any private loan we will connect with you directly.
