大學(xué)決定給學(xué)生提供a new series of classes，一共有three sessions，為了help students adapt to the academic life on campus. And benefits can also come when they socialize。

Listening:

理由1：When he was first enrolled on campus, he had trouble managing his schedule. 于是他把一些learning activities(reading for an essay) postpone to the end of the semester，使得自己never caught up。

理由2：socialize的時(shí)候，music students多數(shù)會(huì)跟自己same interest和same major的人去hang out，而跟不同的人，例如engineer or art students，會(huì)be interesting and rewarding。

Inaction inertia is the phenomenon that one is not likely to act on an attractive opportunity after having bypassed an even more attractive opportunity. So far, all published work has assumed a causal role for the emotion regret in this effect. In a series of 5 experiments we found no support for this regret explanation.

教授舉例是買(mǎi)音樂(lè)會(huì)的票。研究員把participants分成two groups，one group被告訴offered tickets with 10% off，然后80% are willing to accept. 另外一組被告知第 一次phone call票價(jià)50%，但是they failed to pick it up，這時(shí)候再被asked whether they would accept, only few accepted the tickets with 10% off.

英國(guó)海軍Sir John Franklin船上的一些crew死于lead poisoning，有人猜測(cè)是密封canned food所使用的lead導(dǎo)致的，but it is improbable，有以下三個(gè)原因：

1. Lead did not contact with the food. 鉛確實(shí)用來(lái)密封罐頭，但因?yàn)殂U只用于罐頭表面，而不與食物接觸，所以不可能是封罐頭的鉛導(dǎo)致的中毒;

2. Other ships did not report poisoning. 當(dāng)時(shí)其他船的船員也都會(huì)食用這種罐頭，假如真的因?yàn)楣揞^不可能只有這艘船的船員會(huì)發(fā)生中毒案件;

3. Other source led to the poisoning. 這艘船有個(gè)unique water purification system，這個(gè)系統(tǒng)里面有l(wèi)ead pipe，所以是這個(gè)lead pipe的鉛滲入到了水中，造成了船員鉛中毒。

就是canned food上的鉛導(dǎo)致的鉛中毒。

1. canned food的公司給了員工time pressure，所以員工在密封罐頭的時(shí)候會(huì)careless，導(dǎo)致密封鉛與食品接觸，進(jìn)而導(dǎo)致船員中毒;

2. 其他船的船員很可能也中毒了，只不過(guò)比較輕微所以沒(méi)有報(bào)告。因?yàn)檩p微鉛中毒的癥狀是tiredness and headache，容易和其他病癥混淆。所以其他船的船員中毒事件沒(méi)有detected and reported;

這個(gè)unique water purification system是給引擎供水的，因?yàn)槭莝team engine，所以需要把海水變成fresh water，不然引擎用海水會(huì)損壞。并且船員有separate water purification system，并沒(méi)有喝這個(gè)water purification system的水。
