1. What foreign languages have you studied?
English. Knowing English means more opportunities while you’re hunting a job in China. Practice makes perfect. Normally I practice oral English by finding conversation partners, either over the internet via Skype, or in the local community.
2. Would you say it's a difficult language to learn?
English is a beautiful language to learn but it provides a challenge. Languages are cumulative and everything you learn from day one builds upon itself. English grammar can be rather complicated. Pronunciation can be difficult as well.
3. Do Chinese people have many chances to practice oral English?
No. Most of us barely have the opportunities to practice speaking. When you find a face-to-face person to work or live together you can practice your oral English and teach your partner Chinese as an exchange.
4. Do you think it's important to know more than one language?
Yes. Knowing another language helps you to understand people of other cultures not just verbally but socially. Also, in a growing global economy knowing more than one language gives you more opportunities.
5. What is the most difficult part about studying a foreign language?
Grammar rules are hard to remember especially when there’s a huge gap between the mother language and the 2nd language. But the most important of all is determination, though it has nothing to do with the language itself, it really is the thing that decides how fast you are going to learn a language.
What kinds of books do you like to read?
I'd say I like reading quite a variety of books, both fiction as well as nonfiction. So for example, I'm a big fan of detective novels, because I enjoy trying to solve the crimes while I'm reading, although I have to admit I'm pretty useless at it most of the time! And as for nonfiction stuff, I'd say I mostly like reading things like self-help books and biographies of various people I admire, such as the new book on Steve Jobs, which I'm currently in the middle of reading.
Are you reading any books at the moment?
Yeah, I'm actually halfway through a couple of books right now. One of them's a novel which a friend of mine lent me, and the other is a book on business, which I bought about a year ago, but didn't get round to reading until now.
1.Do you think memory is important?
Yes, I do. If we couldn’t remember certain things, life would be very awkward and difficult. Our memories hold a lot of important information we use all the time, every day, just to live.
2.Do you think it's important to have a good memory?
It can certainly help make things easier. If you can remember things easily and not forget them it can be very beneficial. Activities such as studying and learning seem much easier.
3.What are some of the benefits of having a good memory?
I guess some people think you are maybe more intelligent, or certainly smarter than most people, especially if you have an excellent memory and can remember everything. It can help you avoid embarrassing social situations if you never forget someone’s birthday, or if you don’t forget people’s names when you haven’t seen them for a long time.
4.Are there any things that are especially important for people to memorize?
I suppose it depends on the situation. Everything is important to some people. I mean… most people get upset if their friends or someone close forgets their birthday or a special occasion like an anniversary.
5.Do you think having a good memory is important for students?
Well, it certainly helps, doesn’t it? I mean it’s so much easier to remember all those facts, or formulas or information or whatever it is you’re studying. It can save a lot of time if you can just recall most things you need in an instant and not have to review your books or look it up again each time you some information.
Describe a smartphone APP that you think is useful.
You should say:
what the app it is
what contents it has
how do you use it
and explain why you think this app is useful.
The App I would recommend is called Instapaper, which you can download from Apple Store.
Instapaper is one of those tools you didn’t know you needed until you use it. It’s my latest go-to tool for remembering and organizing what I want to read. I think this is useful coz I always find myself browsing the web and happening upon a story or two that I definitely want to read, but for whatever reason I just cannot read it at that particular moment. Most of this resort to saving it as a bookmark so you can read it later. But bookmarks are difficult to access on multiple computers.
Instapaper allows you to easily save them for later, when you do have time, so you don’t just forget about them or skim through them. While you’re browsing the web, when you find something you want to remember to read later to click a little icon in your web browser toolbar. That saves all of the text of the article. That’s Instapaper: the critically acclaimed, award-winning app to read web pages on the go, in the air, or on the couch.
