因果關(guān)系也可以用于猜單詞，大家要有意識地利用起來，尤其是在一些包含生詞的因果關(guān)系句子中，我們可以利用“因”和“果”互相解釋這一特點(diǎn)來進(jìn)行生詞的推斷。我們來看下面這兩個(gè)例題：

The Chinese built their pagodas in brick or stone， with inner staircases， and used them in later centuries mainly as the pagoda reached Japan， however， its architecture was freely adapted to local conditions - they were built less high， typically five rather than nine storeys， made mainly of wood and the staircase was dispensed with because the Japanese pagoda did not have any practical use but became more of an art object.

如果生詞是句子或段落所解釋的定義，理解句子或段落本身就是推斷詞義。

例如： anthropology is the scientific study of man。

由定義可知，anthropology就是“研究人類的科學(xué)”。In slang the term ＂jam＂ constitutes a state of being in which a personfinds himself or herself in a difficult situation。

同樣，從上下文的定義可知jam一詞在俚語中的意思是“困境”。定義句的謂語動(dòng)詞多為：be， mean， deal with， beconsidered， to be， refer to， be called， be known as， define， represent， signify，constitute等。
