Acquiring a new language seems to be a very difficult task for most. However, an unimaginable number of people are learning foreign languages across the world.

For many ordinary people, they are only interested in leaming a new language when they need to travel to or reside in another country. This theory makes sense as learning a new language can be very time consuming and, sometimes, expensive as well.

That is why a sheer number of people are afraid of language learning. Moreover, many people are living and working in a single-language environment which means that their social circle never requires them to speak a foreign language. Therefore the improvement of language skills could not benefit their employment opportunities or income.Correspondingly, being bilingual or even multilingua seems to be impractical and worthless.

From another perspective, the motivation of pursuing another language is never just about travelling or immigration. First, being able to use another language brings advantages to people who are seeking better employment in the local market. For instance, many multinationals in China require their Chinese employees to be able to communicate fluently in English as it is the language used in many written matenals, video conferences and daily e-mails. Admittedly, some language learners have invested a great deal of time and effort in learning a language just because they enjoy learning languages.Similar to self-learing of a musical instrument, many people just hope to be able to read a book or watch their favourite movies in other languages. In addition it is found that those who are driven by this reason are more self-motivated and hardworking.

Overall, every language learner may come from a different background in terms of living, work and regon and their reasons of study may differ as well. Every anguage leamer will benefit from leaming a language whether it is for travelling or any other reason.
