題目
Some people believe that governments should spend money on measures lo save languages with few speakers. However others believe that it is a waste of financial resource. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.(20171104)
范文
Some of the languages used by minority groups could face extinction in the near future. So people claim that the government should spend money in saving these languages from dying out but others believe it is a waste of public financia resources.
It is often said that to preserve a language is to preserve a culture. This is mainly because language s the carrier of culture. It is not only a tool for communication, but it is also part of the local people and their culture. When a language used by few people dies out, the culture connected to this language will disappear as well. For example, songs calligraphy, traditional customs and habits inherited by minority groups will also be lost. Evidently, when a language becomes obsolete, the culture too will fade away.
However, I suggest that even if the government heavily invested in saving languages that were dying out, it could still end up being quite fruitless. First, the real cause of a language dying out is its incompatibility with the development of the society and the economy. Undoubtedly, this is also the rule of history and civilisation. The conventional way of saving a language is to collect enough samples of this languages, by collecting written characters and recordings. It will then be studied and promoted by institutions, such as at some universities where the language can become an official course and be taught and studied. Since people will not have an opportunity to use this language in real life, it will eventually and inevita tably be filed away in the museums archives.
In summary, as well being important for the anguage itself, the protection of a language is also mportant to both culture and history. However, the govemments capital investment is not quite often counterbalanced with the natural development of the society, and for this reason I do not support the government spending too much public funding to protect a language.
